3D Concrete Printing in Multi-Storey Residential Construction

Three four-storey multi-family buildings were developed in Metzingen-Neugreuth. In one of the buildings, the structural walls of the top two floors were produced directly on site using mobile 3D concrete printing.

The load-bearing walls were completed in just four days, reaching heights of up to three meters and wall thicknesses between 16.5 and 19 cm.

What makes Metzingen particularly relevant is the direct comparison within the same building: while the lower storeys were constructed conventionally, the structural walls of the top floor were produced using mobile 3D concrete printing.

The project therefore demonstrates how automated construction can be integrated into an established multi-storey building process.

A Direct Step from Conventional to Robotic Construction

Metzingen demonstrates that 3D concrete printing does not require an entirely new construction ecosystem.

Robotic production can take over selected parts of an established construction process while working alongside conventional trades and methods.

This makes the project an important proof point for scaling the technology in residential construction: digital planning, automated wall production and traditional building processes are combined within the same structure.
